Volynets won the USTA Girls 18 National Championships last year and turned pro in December.
Also today, third-seeded Maiar Sherif Ahmed Abdelaziz of Egypt beat Alexa Glatch, a 31-year-old native of Newport Beach, Calif., 6-2, retired. Glatch, who climbed as high as No. 102 in 2009, has had four hip operations, two knee surgeries and one wrist procedure.
Sherif, who starred at Fresno State for two years (2015-16) before transferring to Pepperdine, is scheduled to play 15th-seeded Harmony Tan of France on Tuesday for a main-draw berth.
In the first round of the main draw, sixth-seeded Kristie Ahn, a 28-year-old Stanford graduate, is scheduled to meet fellow American Caroline Dolehide, 22, on Wednesday. CiCi Bellis, a 21-year-old wild card who grew up near Stanford in Atherton, will face fifth-seeded Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov, a 22-year-old Spanish citizen born in Moldova.
Ahn beat Dolehide 6-1, 7-6 (2) in the second round of the 2017 Sacramento, Calif., Challenger in their only previous meeting. Bellis topped Bolsova Zadoinov 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the $80,000 Bellatorum Resources Pro Classic on hardcourts in Tyler, Texas, in their first career matchup.
