Cal star Giavara improves to 2-0 in UTR $25K

   Haley Giavara, an All-American at the University of California, Berkeley, defeated Leyden Games, a high school senior from Irvine, Calif., headed to USC, 6-4, 6-3 today in the $25,000 UTR Pro Tennis Series in Newport Beach, Calif.
   Giavara, a sophomore from San Diego, improved to 2-0 in the round-robin phase of the singles-only tournament. She is scheduled to play Tsehay Driscoll (0-1), a high school sophomore from Pacific Palisades in the Los Angelea area, on Wednesday.
   Madison Weekley (0-1) of Alamo in the San Francisco Bay Area is slated to meet Bridget Stammel (1-1) of Dallas in a clash of high school juniors. They have verbally committed to attend Saint Mary's in the Bay Area and Vanderbilt, respectively, in 2022. 
   ATP Challenger Tour — Second-seeded Andre Goransson (Cal, 2014-17) of Sweden and David Pel, a 6-foot-6 (1.98-meter) left-hander from the Netherlands, are set to play wild cards Marsel Ilhan, an Uzbekistan native who plays for Turkey, and Malek Jaziri of Tunisia on Wednesday on an indoor hardcourt in the first round of the €132,280 ($160,632) Istanbul Challenger.
