Anisimova, 14, upsets NorCal's Gordon in Herr 18s

   Amanda Anisimova, a 14-year-old wild card from Hallandale Beach, Fla., ousted a seed for the second consecutive match to reach the girls 18 quarterfinals in the Eddie Herr International Tennis Championship in Bradenton, Fla.
   Anisimova wore down 11th-seeded Michaela Gordon, 16, of Saratoga, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 on Thursday. Anisimova, who beat No. 7 seed Bianca Andreescu of Canada in the second round, has won all three of her matches in three sets.
   Anisimova is scheduled to face No. 11 Alexandra Sanford of Westerville, Ohio, today. Sanford defeated Kelly Chen of Cerritos 7-6 (7), 6-4.
   In girls 16 doubles, No. 2 seeds Nicole Mossmer of La Jolla and Jessi Muljat, 14, of Sacramento advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Victoria Kurz of Germany and Adelaide Lavery of Canada.
   Mossmer and Muljat will meet either No. 8 seeds Georgia Gulin of Brazil and Fernanda Labrana or unseeded Carolyn Campana of Hillsborough and Abigail Forbes of Raleigh, N.C. 
   The Eddie Herr Championship is one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world. Past competitors include Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.
   Herr, the father of international junior tennis, died in 2000 at 93.

NorCal's Motevassel, Smith in Nat'l 40 Hard Court semis

   Two Northern California men reached the semifinals of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla.
   No. 3 seed Oren Motevassel of San Jose dismissed No. 9 Jesse Ponwith of Scottsdale, Ariz., 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday. Also, No. 9 David Smith of San Francisco beat unseeded Shibu Lal of Novato 6-2, 6-4.
   Motevassel, the 2011 and 2012 champion, will face top seed and two-time defending champion Tony Bujan of Tustin on Saturday. Bujan, a three-time All-American at TCU in the early 1990s, topped No. 5 seed and 2009 champion Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo 6-3, 6-5.
   Smith will meet No. 4 Marcio Carlsson of Las Vegas. Carlsson crushed No. 5 Michael Chang -- no, not that Michael Chang -- of Anaheim 6-0, 6-1.
   On the women's side, No. 1 seed Amy Frazier of Rochester, Mich., will play No. 2 seed and defending champion Dina McBride of Stevenson Ranch in today's final.
   Frazier, who climbed to a career-high No. 13 in the world in 1995, held off third seed and 2011 champion Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. McBride overwhelmed unseeded Fanny Gamble of San Rafael 6-1, 6-0.
   In the men's doubles semifinals, No. 5 seeds Jared Jacobs of Scottsdale and Wiliam Quest of Ventura beat No. 2 Leon Bax of Mountain View and Nicolas Chasseray of San Francisco 7-5, 7-5.

   No. 11 seed Michaela Gordon of Saratoga in the San Francisco Bay Area defeated wild card Ellie Douglas of McKinney, Texas, 6-0, 6-4 today in the second round of the girls 18s in the Eddie Herr International Tennis Championship in Bradenton, Fla.
   Gordon, 16, will meet another wild card, 14-year-old Amanda Anisimova of Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Thursday for a quarterfinal berth. Anisimova surprised No. 7 seed Bianca Andreescu of Canada 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
   Unseeded Jessi Muljat, 14, of Sacramento and Anna Campana of Hillsborough in the Bay Area lost in the second round of the girls 16s.

Bay Area players oust seeds in Nat'l 40 Hard Courts

   Fanny Gamble and Shibu Lal of the San Francisco Bay Area upset seeds today in the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla.

   Gamble, from San Rafael, eliminated No. 4 Mercedes Michel of New York 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the women's quarterfinals. Lal ousted No. 5 Kerry Safdie of San Diego 4-6, 6-3, 5-5, retired to reach the men's quarters. 

   Also advancing in the men's draw were No. 3 Oren Motevassel of San Jose, No. 5 Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo and No. 9 David Smith of San Francisco. All won in straight sets.

   In Thursday's women's semifinals, No. 1 Amy Frazier of Rochester, Mich., will face No. 3 Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, and No. 2 Dina McBride of Stevenson Ranch will play Gamble.
   Frazier, who climbed to No. 13 in the world in 1995, is playing in her first tournament since retiring from the pro tour in 2006. McBride is the defending champion, and Dawson won the 2011 title.

   Greenwald, the 2009 champion, will have difficulty reaching the semifinals for the third straight year. He'll take on No. 1 seed and two-time defending champion Tony Bujan, a teaching pro from Tustin who earned All-America honors three times at TCU in the early 1990s.

Roseville's Riffice falls in first round of Eddie Herr 18s

   Sam Riffice of Roseville in the Sacramento area lost to Ergi Kirkin of Turkey 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the first round of the boys 18s in this week's Eddie Herr International Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
   Riffice, who trains at the USTA center in Boca Raton, Fla., won the Eddie Herr 16s last year at 15 and repeated in the Orange Bowl the following week. They are among the top junior tournaments in the world.
   Past competitors in the Eddie Herr include Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.

   Riffice and Vasil Kirkov of Tampa, Fla., won in the first round of doubles.
   On the girls side, 11th-seeded Michaela Gordon of Saratoga advanced in the opening round of the 18s, and Anna Campana of Hillsborough and Jessi Muljat of Sacramento triumphed in the 16s.
   Gordon, 16, whipped Thaisa Pedretti of Brazil 6-2, 6-0.
   Campana upset 15th-seeded Judith Van Kessel of the Netherlands 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Muljat, 14, overwhelmed Flavia Gutierrez of Bolivia 6-1, 6-0 to set up a meeting with fifth-seeded Mihaela Marculescu of Romania.
   Gordon also breezed in the opening round of doubles with Jacqueline Cristian of Romania. They are seeded third.
   The second-seeded team of Muljat and Nicole Mossmer of La Jolla received a first-round bye.

NorCal seeds to meet in National 40 Hard Courts

   Northern California seeds Jeff Greenwald and Leon Bax are scheduled to meet on Wednesday for a berth in the quarterfinals of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla.
   Greenwald, the fifth seed and 2009 champion, dismissed William Casas of Rancho Mission Viejo 6-0, 6-2 today. Bax, seeded ninth, outclassed Thomas Cooper of Rancho Palos Verdes 6-1, 6-2.
   Also advancing to the quarterfinals with easy victories were top-seeded Tony Bujan of Tustin, third-seeded Oren Motevassel of San Jose, ninth-seeded David Smith of San Francisco and unseeded Shibu Lal of Novato.
   Bujan, a three-time All-American at TCU in the early 1990s, is trying to become the first man to win the title three years in a row since USC men's coach Peter Smith (2005-07).
   Motevassel, who reached a career-high No. 161 in the world in 1997, won the crown in 2011 and 2012.
   Fanny Gamble of San Rafael and Zeynep Aynaci of San Francisco moved into the women's quarterfinals. Gamble eased past Christine Anzai of San Diego 6-2, 6-2, and Aynaci advanced by walkover.
   Aynaci will take on Jennifer Dawson, the third seed and 2011 champion, of Carlsbad. Gamble will meet fourth-seeded Mercedes Michel of New York.
   Top-seeded Amy Frazier of Rochester, Mich., thrashed Cynthia Delgado of La Jolla 6-1, 6-0. Frazier, a two-time Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist, climbed to a career-high No. 13 in 1995. She is playing in her first tournament since retiring from the pro tour in 2006.

NorCal's Greenwald advances in National 40 Hard Courts

    Fifth-seeded Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo routed Wade Murphy of Rancho Palos Verdes 6-1, 6-1 on Monday in the first round of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla.
   Greenwald, 49, won the 2009 title and has reached the semifinals the past two years.
   Also advancing in straight sets were ninth seeds Nicolas Chasseray and David Smith of San Francisco and Leon Bax of Mountain View.
   Top-seeded Tony Bujan, the two-time defending champion from Tustin, and third-seeded Oren Motevassel, the 2011 and 2012 champion from San Jose, received first-round byes.
   So did the women's No. 1 seed, Amy Frazier of Rochester, Mich. Frazier, 43, won eight singles and four doubles titles on the WTA tour during her 16-year professional career.
   A two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Frazier climbed to a career-high No. 13 in the world in 1995. She has beaten former world No. 1s Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis.
