The Santa Clara women overcame a 2-0 deficit to stun BYU 4-3 on Thursday in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships in Claremont, Calif.
Chelby Cooke, saving four match points, kept the fourth-seeded Broncos alive with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Savannah Ware on Court 3 to tie the score 3-3. Daniella Silva then won it for Santa Clara, outlasting Mayci Jones 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Court 1.
In today's semifinals, the Broncos (13-9) will play No. 1 seed and eighth-ranked Pepperdine (19-2), and No. 3 seed Saint Mary's will face No. 2 Gonzaga. The Gaels eliminated No. 6 USF 4-2, while the Waves and Zags received a bye.
On the men's side, No. 5 seed Portland defeated No. 4 Pacific 4-2 in the first round in Claremont.
Meanwhile, the UC Davis men and women were eliminated in the Big West Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. The No. 3-seeded Aggies men lost to No. 2 Cal Poly 4-2, and the No. 7 UCD women fell to No. 2 UC Santa Barbara 4-0.

UC Davis men blank Hawaii to reach Big West semis

The Aggies, ranked 70th nationally, set a Division I program record with their 17th victory (against six losses) and reached the Big West semifinals for the third straight year. Hawaii ended its season at 1-17.
Everett Maltby, a sophomore from Sunnyvale in the San Francisco Bay Area, crushed Nikolai Storch 6-0, 6-0 on Court 5 to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead.
After James Wade coasted 6-1, 6-1 on Court 2, senior Brett Bacharach from Newcastle in the Sacramento region provided the clincher with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Marcel Chan on Court 3.
UC Davis will try to reach the Big West final for the first time when it faces No. 2 seed Cal Poly (13-0) on Thursday at 3 p.m. In the only meeting between the school this season, the Mustangs prevailed 4-3 on April 16 in San Luis Obispo.
No. 1 UC Santa Barbara (15-6), the defending champion, will play No. 4 UC Irvine (17-8) in the other semifinal.
UCSB and Cal Poly received first-round byes.
The No. 7-seeded UC Davis women (10-11) will take on No. 2 UC Santa Barbara (15-7) on Thursday in the Big West quarterfinals in Indian Wells. Both teams have first-round byes.

UC Davis' Steidlmayer named Big West Coach of Year
Eric Steidlmayer of UC Davis became the first Big West Conference Men's Coach of the Year in program history on Tuesday.
In his third year as the Aggies' coach, Steidlmayer guided the team to a 16-6 record and share of the Big West regular-season title. The 16 wins set the program's Division I record, surpassing the previous mark of 14 last season.
UC Davis also returned to the national rankings for the first time in seven seasons, climbing to a program-best No. 53 on April 14. The Aggies are now No. 57.
UC Davis earned its highest seeding in the Big West tournament at No. 2 but fell to No. 3 UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals. The Gauchos went on to win the title.
Two Aggies, sophomores Alec Adamson (Corona del Mar) and James Wade (San Marino), were named to the All-Big West first team.
Earning second-team honors in doubles were Adamson with junior Adam Levie (Solana Beach) and sophomore Bryce McKelvie (San Jose) with junior Brett Bacharach (Newcastle in the Sacramento area). Wade and freshman Tommy Lam (Hong Kong) received honorable mention in doubles.

Sac State women's streak of Big Sky MVPs ends
For the first time in 12 years, a Sacramento State woman was not named the Big Sky Conference MVP.
That honor went to Montana junior Haley Driver of Scottsdale, Ariz., the league announced Thursday.
But two Hornets, senior Sophie Lohscheidt of Germany and sophomore Daria Savchenko of Russia, made the All-Big Sky first team.
Two other Sac State women were honored. Freshman Alina Soltanici of Moldova was named to the second team, and sophomore Olivia Boija of Sweden received honorable mention.
Boija beat Laurence Pelchat in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles Sunday to give Sac State a 4-3 victory over Montana in the final of the Big Sky tournament in the Sacramento suburb of Gold River.
Two Sac State men, junior Roy Brandys of Poland and sophomore Niranjan Ram of India, were named first-team All-Big Sky. No other Hornets men received recognition.

Eight NorCal teams earn NCAA D-I bids; pro rankings
Five women's and three men's teams from Northern California received bids to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The women's field features No. 7 Cal, No. 12 Stanford, No. 40 Saint Mary's, No. 66 San Jose State and unranked Sacramento State. The Bears, Cardinal and Gaels gained at-large bids in the 64-team field. The Spartans and Hornets earned automatic bids by winning the Western Athletic Conference and Big Sky Conference tournaments, respectively.
The men's field includes No. 18 Cal, No. 41 Stanford and unranked Sac State. The Bears and Cardinal received at-large invitations in the 64-team draw, while the Hornets snagged an automatic bid by capturing the Big Sky tourney.
In the women's bracket, Saint Mary's (13-9) will play No. 21 Auburn (18-8) at Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex on May 10 at 10 a.m., following by the Bears (16-5) against unranked Stony Brook (12-4) at 1 p.m. The winners will meet on May 12 at noon at Cal.
The Stanford women (16-4) will host unranked Miami of Ohio (13-12) at Taube Family Tennis Stadium on May 10 at 2 p.m. The winner will play either No. 20 Rice or No. 62 Pepperdine at Stanford on May 11 at 1 p.m.
On May 11 at USC, the San Jose State women (19-5) will take on No. 31 UC Irvine (22-4) at 9 a.m., followed by the Sac State women (13-13) vs. the host Trojans (21-2) at noon. The winners will meet on May 12 at noon.
