Rankings mover of the week: Bradley Klahn

   Bradley Klahn continued his comeback from back surgery by reaching the singles final and winning the doubles title in the recent $25,000 Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas in the Los Angeles area.
   Klahn, who won the 2010 NCAA singles title as a Stanford sophomore, soared 130 places to No. 633 in singles and 139 spots to No. 475 in doubles.
   The 26-year-old left-hander from the San Diego suburb of Poway climbed to career highs of No. 63 in singles and No. 131 in doubles in March 2014. However, he underwent his second operation for a herniated disc in February 2015 and missed almost two years.

   Nicole Gibbs, unable to duplicate her success last spring, continued to tumble in the world rankings.
   The former Stanford star (2011-13), who climbed to a career-high No. 68 last July, plunged 25 more places to No. 119 this week after losing in the first round at Indian Wells to Heather Watson of Great Britain. Gibbs is 0-3 since reaching the third round of the Australian Open in January.
   Gibbs advanced to the fourth round at Indian Wells as a qualifier last year, upsetting Madison Keys in the second round and losing to two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-4 in the third set.

  Sam Querrey jumped 14 places to
No. 26 in the world on Monday after winning last week's Mexican Open in Acapulco.
   It's Querrey's highest ranking since he also was No. 26 in 2013. The 29-year-old San Francisco native reached a career-high No. 17 in 2011.
   The unseeded Querrey knocked off four top-20 players in succession to become the first U.S. man to win Acapulco in the 24-year history of the tournament. He ousted, in order, No. 11 David Goffin, No. 9 Dominic Thiem, No. 17 Nick Kyrgios and No. 6 Rafael Nadal.
   Thiem was the defending champion, Kyrgios had upset Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, and Nadal won Acapulco twice (2005 and 2013) when the tournament was played on clay.
   Querrey, seeded 23rd in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, will play the winner of today's first-round match between Americans Donald Young and Stefan Kozlov. All men's and women's seeds received opening-round byes.
   Querrey reached the round of 16 at Indian Wells in 2011 and 2013 for his best results in the tournament.

   Five weeks before turning 18, CiCi Bellis is on the verge of cracking the top 50 in the world.
   Bellis, who grew up in Atherton in the San Francisco Bay Area and now is based in Orlando, Fla., jumped 14 places to No. 56 by reaching the quarterfinals of last week's Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
   She ousted sixth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round for her first victory over a top-10 player before losing to former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
   Bellis is by far the youngest player in the top 100. Next is No. 33 Ana Konjuh, a Croat who turned 19 on Dec. 27.

Rankings movers of the week: Querrey, Altamirano

   Rising five places in the world rankings might not sound like much, especially considering Collin Altamirano of Sacramento has skyrocketed 584 spots in the last two weeks.
   But the higher you go, the harder it is to move up. So Sam Querrey's jump from No. 32 to
No. 27 is significant.
   Querrey, a 29-year-old San Francisco native, improved by reaching the third round of the Australian Open (losing to top-ranked Andy Murray) after falling in the first round in Melbourne last year.
   It's Querrey's highest ranking since he was No. 26 on Aug. 5, 2013. He attained his career high of No. 17 in 2011.
   Altamirano, a junior at two-time defending NCAA champion Virginia, soared from No. 1,395 to No. 811 by advancing to the quarterfinals in Los Angeles and the final in Long Beach on the Futures circuit.

   Two months after turning pro, CiCi Bellis became the youngest player ranked among the top 100 women in the world.
   By far.
   Bellis, a 17-year-old product of Atherton in the San Francisco Bay Area, improved 11 places to No. 90 with her second straight title in a $50,000 Canadian indoor hardcourt tournament last week.
  The top-seeded Bellis overcame fourth-seeded Jesika Maleckova, a 22-year-old Czech, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to win the Tevlin Challenger in Toronto. Bellis also won Saguenay two weeks earlier.
   Bellis was born 15 months after the next youngest player in the top 100, No. 48 Ana Konjuh of Croatia. Konjuh, a U.S. Open quarterfinalist in September, will turn 19 on Dec. 27.
   Bellis reached the third round of the U.S. Open as a qualifier. At 15, she stunned 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the first round of the 2014 U.S. Open. Cibulkova was the runner-up to since-retired Li Na of China in the Australian Open that year.
