Gordon, 15, upsets eighth seed in Eddie Herr

Michaela Gordon of Saratoga ousted eighth-seeded Sandra Samir of Egypt 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Monday in the first round of the girls 18s in the Eddie Herr International Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
Also, top-seeded CiCi Bellis of Atherton outclassed Charlotte Robillard-Millette of Canada 6-1, 6-3.
Both San Francisco Bay Area residents are 15.
Top-seeded Sam Riffice (boys 16s) and ninth-seeded Keenan Mayo (boys 14s), both from Roseville in the Sacramento area, advanced in straight sets.
Bellis will face Destanee Avaia of Australia for the first time in the second round on Wednesday. Gordon will meet Maia Lumsden of Great Britain for the second time. Gordon won 6-2, 6-1 in the girls round of 16 at Wimbledon in July.
Bellis became a national sensation when she stunned 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova, the Australian Open runner-up in January, in the first round of women's singles at the U.S. Open.
Gordon reached the quarterfinals of the $25,000 Redding Challenger the week after the U.S. Open and came within a tiebreaker of a semifinal berth.

Top seed Motevassel advances in National 40s

Top-seeded Oren Motevassel of San Jose defeated Steve Heroux of Hidden Hills, Calif., 6-0, 6-4 on Monday in the second round of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla.
Motevassel, who received a first-round bye, won the title in 2011 and 2012. He will face unseeded Misha Yevtich, a Las Vegan who trounced Wade Murphy of Ranch Palos Verdes, Calif., 6-0, 6-1.
Breezing into the third round were No. 2 seed Tony Bujan, the defending champion from Tustin, Calif., and No. 3 Jeff Tarango, the 2010 champion from Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Tarango, a former Stanford All-American, reached No. 10 in the world in doubles in 1999 and No. 42 in singles in 1992.
Tarango is perhaps best known, however, for walking off the court during his third-round singles match at Wimbledon in 1995 in a dispute with chair umpire Bruno Rebeuh. As if that wasn't bizarre enough, Tarango's wife at the time, Benedicte, then slapped Rebeuh twice.
