No. 6 seed Jennifer Elie of the United States defeated Cal star Maegan Manasse 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday in the first round of qualifying for the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger in Stockton, Calif.
The tournament is being held at the new Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center at the University of the Pacific.
Manasse, from Redondo Beach in the Los Angeles area, reached the singles round of 16 and the doubles final with Denise Starr in the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., in May as a junior.
Elie, a 29-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., native, advanced to the quarterfinals of the $25,000 Palmetto Pro Open in Sumter, S.C., last month.
Three seeds -- No. 5 Renata Zarazua of Mexico, No. 7 Greet Minnen of Belgium and No. 8 Shiho Akita of Japan -- lost to Americans.
Also, Chanel Simmonds of South Africa defeated 6-foot-1 (1.85-meter) Alexandra Stevenson, the 35-year-old daughter of basketball legend Julius Erving, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Stevenson became the first female qualifier in Wimbledon history to reach the semifinals (1999) before shoulder problems derailed her career.
In an all-University of Florida encounter, reigning NCAA singles champion Brooke Austin beat wild card Brianna Morgan 7-5, 6-2. Austin reached the semifinals of the $50,000 Sacramento Challenger last July.
In a matchup of San Francisco Bay Area residents, Giuliana Olmos, 23, of Fremont routed Sara Choy, 16, of Palo Alto 6-2, 6-1. Olmos completed an All-America career at USC in May.
Jacqueline Cako, a 24-year-old native of Brier, Wash., who starred at Arizona State, dominated Karina Kristina Vyrlan, 17, of Sacramento 6-2, 6-0.
