Stanford women win Pac-12 title; Cal men lose in final

   The Stanford women rallied to win their fourth consecutive Pac-12 title on Saturday in Ojai, Calif., but Cal lost to USC in the men's final.

   The Cardinal women (22-1), seeded first and ranked fifth, defeated UCLA (18-7), seeded second and ranked ninth, 4-2 for their 17th straight victory.
   Stanford's Melissa Lord won in straight sets on Court 2 to tie the score 2-2. Michaela Gordon, a sophomore from Saratoga in the San Francisco Bay Area, made it 3-2 with a victory in straight sets on Court 1. Emily Arbuthnott beat Alaina Miller, a senior from Saratoga, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0 on Court 4 for the clincher.
   The Cal men (14-12), seeded fourth and ranked 33rd, fell to USC (20-7), seeded second and ranked eighth, 4-0. The Bears had stunned UCLA, the top seed and defending champion, 4-1 on Friday to become the lowest-seeded team to reach the Pac-12 final since the men's team championship began in 2012. 
   The Stanford women and USC men earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, May 16-25 in Orlando, Fla. The fields will be announced on Monday at 3 p.m. (live streaming on NCAA.com). 

Cal men, Stanford women reach Pac-12 finals

   The fourth-seeded Cal men made history today with their 4-1 victory over top seed and defending champion UCLA in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif.
   The Bears, who had been 0-2 against UCLA this season, became the lowest-seeded team to reach the Pac-12 final since the men's team championship began in 2012.
   Jacob Brumm, a sophomore from Rancho Santa Fe in the San Diego area, clinched the victory for 33rd-ranked Cal (14-11) over eighth-ranked UCLA (17-5) by defeating Ben Goldberg 6-3, 6-2 on Court 5.
   The Bears will meet second-seeded USC (19-7), which beat third-seeded Stanford (17-6) 4-2, on Saturday at 3 p.m. (Pac-12 Network). The conference champion receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships.
   On the women's side, defending NCAA and Pac-12 champion Stanford will face UCLA in the final for the second consecutive year at noon (Pac-12 Network).
   The top-seeded Cardinal (21-1) blanked fourth-seeded USC 4-0 for its 16th consecutive victory, and the second-seeded Bruins (18-6) edged third-seeded Washington 4-3.
   UCLA senior Alaina Miller, a senior from Saratoga in the San Francisco Bay Area, lost to Natsuho Arakawa 7-5, 6-4 on Court 4. Miller did not play doubles.
   Stanford seeks its fourth straight Pac-12 title.

Stanford women beat UCLA for Pac-12 title

   The Stanford women were ranked 46th, the lowest position in program history, when Pacific-12 Conference play on March 9.
   Then the Cardinal got healthy and finished 9-0 in conference matches.
   Stanford continued its momentum in the Pac-12 Championships, beating UCLA 4-2 today in Ojai for its third consecutive conference title and 14th straight victory.
   Stanford received an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 11 at regional sites. The selection show is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. PDT.
   The Cardinal leads all schools with 18 NCAA women's national championships. Florida is next with seven.
   Stanford (18-3), seeded first in the Pac-12 Championships and ranked 16th, rallied after losing the doubles point against the Bruins, seeded second and ranked 13th.
   Emily Arbuthnott, a sophomore from England ranked 51st, clinched the Cardinal's victory by topping Abi Altick, ranked 59th, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Court 4.
   Stanford's Michaela Gordon, a freshman from Saratoga, lost at No. 1 doubles and singles. No. 6-ranked Terri Fleming and Jada Hart edged No. 2 Arbuthnott and Gordon 7-6 (6). Then 14th-ranked Ena Shibahara outlasted the 16th-ranked Gordon 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
   UCLA's Alaina Miller, a junior from Saratoga who uses two hands on both sides, won at No. 3 doubles but lost at No. 6 singles. Miller and Shibahara defeated Melissa Lord and Janice Shin 6-4. Emma Higuchi beat the 117th-ranked Miller 6-4, 7-6 (5).
   In the men's final, top-seeded UCLA defeated third-seeded USC 4-1. The Bruins' Logan Staggs, a senior from Tracy ranked 86th, was tied with Thibault Forget, the son of former world No. 4 Guy Forget of France, 6-3, 3-6 on Court 4 when the match was abandoned. Staggs, a 5-foot-9 (1.75-meter) left-hander, did not play doubles.

Stanford women reach Pac-12 final with 1,000th win

   Freshman Michaela Gordon of Saratoga not only put the Stanford women in their second consecutive Pac-12 Championships final, she gave the Cardinal its 1,000th victory in 44 seasons.
   Stanford, seeded first and ranked 16th, demolished Washington State, seeded fifth and ranked 48th, 4-0 in Ojai to improve to 1,000-103 (.907) in program history.
   The 16th-ranked Gordon clinched Stanford's 13th straight victory by defeating No. 26 Michaela Bayerlova 6-3, 7-5 on Court 1. Gordon also won at No. 1 doubles with Emily Arbuthnott. They are ranked second.
   Stanford (17-3), the defending champion, will meet UCLA today at noon (Pac-12 Network). The Bruins (20-4), seeded second and ranked 13th, beat Arizona State, seeded third, 4-1.
   Alaina Miller, a junior from Saratoga, won at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles for UCLA.
   In the only meeting between Stanford and UCLA this year, the Cardinal won 4-3 on March 9 at Stanford. The Cardinal lost the doubles point and played without junior All-American Melissa Lord, who returned from an injury one month ago.
   The Stanford men, seeded second and ranked fourth, lost to USC, seeded third and ranked 12th, 4-0 in the semifinals. The Cardinal (21-3) had been 2-0 against the Trojans (17-7) this season.
   Stanford nevertheless will receive an at-large berth in the NCAA Championships. The men's and women's selection show is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. The team competition begins May 11 for the women and May 12 for the men, both at regional sites.
   In the Big West Conference Championships at Indian Wells, the No. 7-seeded Cal Poly women stunned No. 2 UC Davis 4-3 in the quarterfinals after trailing 3-1.
   In the West Coast Conference Championships at Claremont, the No. 1-seeded Pepperdine women routed No. 5 Saint Mary's 4-0 in the semifinals.

Stanford men, women gain Pac-12 semifinals

   The Stanford men and women marched into today's semifinals in the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, north of Los Angeles.
   The No. 2-seeded Cardinal men beat No. 7 Washington 4-2 to continue their best season since 2001. Stanford, ranked fourth, improved to 21-2 with its sixth consecutive victory.
   In the semifinals, Stanford will face No. 3 USC, and No. 1 UCLA will meet No. 4 Oregon. The Ducks edged No. 5 Cal 4-3 on Thomas Laurent's 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Billy Griffith of Fresno on Court 1.
   The No. 1-seeded Stanford women whipped No. 8 Washington 4-0 for their 12th consecutive win and 999th in program history.
   The 16th-ranked Cardinal (16-3) will play fifth-seeded Washington State, which edged No. 4 Cal 4-3 on Tiffany Mylonas' 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) triumph over Maria Smith on Court 4. Smith survived six match points before succumbing. Cal had led 3-1.
   In the other women's semifinal, No. 2 UCLA will meet No. 3 Arizona State.

Cal's Manasse wins Pac-12 women's singles title

   Cal's Maegan Manasse ended UCLA's streak of three consecutive women's singles titles in the Pacific-12 Conference Championships.
   Manasse, seeded first, outclassed Catherine Harrison, the third seed and defending champion, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's final in Ojai, Calif. Manasse is ranked 11th and Harrison 17th.
   Jennifer Brady won the title in 2014 and Kyle McPhillips in 2013.
   Manasse, a junior from Redondo Beach in the Los Angeles area, became the third Bear to win the Pac-12 singles crown and first since Zsuzsanna Fodor 10 years ago. Raquel Kops-Jones triumphed in 2004.
   In the women's doubles final, Stanford's Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao fell to Arizona State's Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho 6-3, 6-1. Both teams were unseeded.
   Lord, a freshman from Bloomfield, Conn., and Zhao, a junior from Canada, have played together for only one month.
   Zhao won the 2015 title with Taylor Davidson, who was seeded second this year with Caroline Doyle of San Francisco. They lost to unseeded Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi of Washington in the quarterfinals.
   Osborne and Panoho, the 22nd-ranked pair, gave Arizona State its first Pac-12 title and became only the third team from a school outside California to win the doubles crown.
   Arizona's Lindsay Blau and Michelle Gough prevailed in 2000, and the Wildcats' Alix Creek and Danielle Scott captured the 1992 title.
  ATP World Tour -- Former Stanford stars Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, seeded second, beat wild cards Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Marcel Granollers of Spain 7-5, 7-5 for their third title in the Barcelona Open and 111th overall.

   Cal fell short of the men's title in the Pacific-12 Confererence Championships, but a Bear could win the women's singles crown.
   The Cal men, seeded third and ranked 16th, lost to UCLA, seeded first and ranked second, 4-1 on Saturday in the Pac-12 final in Ojai. No Cal team has won the Pac-12 title.
   Mackenzie McDonald, ranked No. 10, clinched the victory for the Bruins (22-2) on Court 1. The junior from Piedmont in the San Francisco Bay Area outlasted No. 27 Florian Lakat 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, dropping Cal to 17-6.
   No. 1 seed Maegan Manasse of Cal will play No. 3 seed and defending champion Catherine Harrison of UCLA for the women's singles title today at 10 a.m. (Pac-12 Network).
   Manasse, ranked 11th, wore down fourth-seeded Giuliana Olmos of USC and Fremont in the Bay Area 6-4, 6-0. Harrison, ranked 17th, outclassed seventh-seeded Lauren Marker of Arizona 6-1, 6-4.
   Manasse will try to become the third Bear to win the Pac-12 singles title and first since Zsuzsanna Fodor 10 years ago. Raquel Kops-Jones triumphed in 2004.

Cal men defeat USC, advance to first Pac-12 final

   The No. 3-seeded Cal men defeated No. 2 USC 4-1 on Friday in Ojai, Calif., to reach their first Pacific-12 Conference Championships final.
   No. 82 Billy Griffith, a sophomore from Fresno, provided the clincher with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 59 Logan Smith on Court 3.
   Cal (17-5) will face No. 1 seed UCLA (21-2), which topped No. 4 Stanford 4-1.
   In women's singles, No. 1 seed Maegan Manasse of Cal will meet No. 4 Giuliana Olmos of USC and Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area for a berth in Sunday's final.
   In the other semifinal, No. 3 seed and defending champion Catherine Harrison of UCLA will face No. 7 Lauren Marker of Arizona. Both defeated Stanford players.
   Harrison ended Krista Hardebeck's winning streak at 17 matches with a 6-2, 6-3 decision. Marker outlasted Caroline Doyle of San Francisco 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
   The top two doubles seeds, No. 1 Manasse and Denise Starr and No. 2 Taylor Davidson and Doyle, lost one-set matches in the first round and quarterfinals, respectively.
   Reaching the doubles semifinals in opposite halves of the draw were No. 4 Olmos and Gabby Smith and unseeded Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao of Stanford.

Stanford's Doyle upsets No. 2 seed, gains Pac-12 QFs

   Caroline Doyle of Stanford won two matches, including an upset of No. 2 seed Klara Fabikova of Cal, on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Pacific-12 Conference Championships in Ojai, Calif.
   Doyle, a junior from San Francisco, dismissed Nia Rose of Oregon 6-2, 6-3 in the first round and Fabikova 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 to set up a match against No. 7 Lauren Marker of Arizona.
   Also advancing to the quarterfinals were No. 1 Maegan Manasse of Cal, No. 4 Giuliana Olmos of USC and Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Krista Hardebeck of Stanford.
   Hardebeck, a senior from Santa Ana in the Los Angeles area, has won 17 consecutive singles matches. It's the longest winning streak in a season by a Cardinal since Nicole Gibbs won her last 17 matches in 2012 en route to the first of her two straight NCAA singles titles. Gibbs is now ranked No. 74 in the world.
   Hardebeck, though, will face No. 3 seed and defending champion Catherine Harrison of UCLA.
   Doubles play begins today. Manasse and Denise Starr are seeded first, and Taylor Davidson and Doyle are second.
   Stanford's Carol Zhao, last year's NCAA singles runner-up to Jamie Loeb of North Carolina, is playing doubles only in the Pac-12 Championships.
   Meanwhile, the Cal and Stanford men reached today's semifinals with 4-0 victories in the team competition. The No. 3-seeded Bears blitzed No. 6 Washington, and the No. 4 Cardinal whipped No. 5 Oregon.
   Cal (16-5) will play No. 2 USC (15-5), and Stanford (14-9) will take on No. 1 UCLA (20-2), featuring 10th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of Piedmont in the Bay Area.

Stanford women beat USC for Pac-12 title

  The No. 13 Stanford women defeated No. 19 USC 4-2 today in Ojai, Calif., to win the Pacific-12 Conference title.

   The Cardinal (14-5, 9-1) earned its 25th conference crown, but first since 2012, and the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships on May 13-14.

   Stanford overcame a 2-0 deficit against USC (12-5, 7-1) in the makeup of the March 11 match at Stanford that was rained out.

   No. 33 Carol Zhao, last year's NCAA runner-up to Jamie Loeb of North Carolina, launched the comeback with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 24 Giuliana Olmos of Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area on Court 1. 

   Stanford then picked up victories from No. 40 Taylor Davidson on Court 2 and freshmen Melissa Lord on Court 6 and Caroline Lampl on Court 5. 

   It was Lampl's team-high six clinching win and second in a row as host Stanford handed top-ranked Cal its only loss of the regular season, 4-3, on Saturday. 

   Stanford has won a record 17 NCAA team titles. Florida is next with six.

   The Pac-12 Women's Championships (individual singles and doubles) begin Thursday in Ojai.    

   The Pac-12 Men's Championships (team) started today in Ojai. No. 5 seed Oregon blanked No. 8 Arizona 4-0, and No. 6 Washington edged No. 7 Utah 4-3.

   In Thursday's matches,  No. 4 Stanford will face Oregon at noon, and No. 3 Cal will meet Washington at 3 p.m. No. 1 UCLA, with 10th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of Piedmont in the Bay Area, and No. 2 USC have byes until Friday's semifinals.

Stanford women to face USC for Pac-12 title

   The No. 17 Stanford women will face No. 21 USC in a make-up match on Wednesday in Ojai, Calif., for the Pacific-12 Conference title.
   The Trojans (12-4, 7-0) forced the showdown by defeating No. 23 UCLA 4-1 at USC on Sunday.
   USC's scheduled match at Stanford on March 11 was rained out.
   The Cardinal (13-5, 8-1) seeks its first Pac-12 title since 2012.
   Ninth-ranked Giuliana Olmos, from Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Gabby Smith beat sixth-ranked Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips 6-3 to help USC win the doubles point against UCLA (14-6,
6-3).
   Olmos, ranked No. 24 in singles, trailed No. 17 Harrison 7-6 (2), 2-2 on Court 1 when their match was suspended.
   Alaina Miller, a freshman from Saratoga in the Bay Area, gave UCLA its point by beating No. 99 Smith 6-0, 7-5 on Court 4. Miller, who uses two hands on both sides, did not play doubles.
   The Pac-12 Championships are scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday in Ojai, located northwest of Los Angeles near Santa Barbara.

USC men rally to beat Stanford for Pac-12 title

   The Stanford men twice were on the verge of winning the Pac-12 Championships but couldn't prevail.
    Leading 3-2, the 26th-ranked Cardinal dropped the last two matches to No. 8 USC on Saturday in Ojai.
   No. 67 Nick Crystal got the Trojans, coming off their fifth NCAA team title in six years, even with a 7-6 (tiebreaker score not available), 6-4 victory over Maciek Romanwicz on Court 6.
   In the deciding match on Court 2, No. 100 Eric Johnson defeated No. 69 John Morrissey 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
   USC (22-4) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 8 at sites around the country. Stanford (17-6) likely will receive an at-large berth when the field is announced on Tuesday.
   In the women's (individual) tournament, fourth-seeded Klara Fabikova of Cal routed top-seeded Giuliana Olmos of USC 6-1, 6-2 to reach the final. Olmos, a junior, is from Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area.
   Fabikova, a junior from the Czech Republic, will meet unseeded Catherine Harrison of UCLA. Harrison advanced when Zoe Scandalis of USC pulled out with an undisclosed injury.
   None of the top three women in the country -- No. 1 Robin Anderson of UCLA, No. 2 Carol Zhao of Stanford or No. 3 Maegan Manasse of Cal -- played singles. Nor did No. 17 Taylor Davidson of Stanford. Anderson didn't play doubles, either.
   In an all-Stanford doubles final, top-seeded Davidson and Zhao will play fourth-seeded Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay.
   Mountain West Conference Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. -- Top-seeded Fresno State and third-seeded San Jose State lost heartbreakers in the women's semifinals.
   The Bulldogs fell to fifth-seeded Wyoming 4-3, and the Spartans succumbed to second-seeded New Mexico by the same score.
   Fresno State trailed 3-0, but Sophie Watts, the Mountain West Player of the Year, saved two match points on Court 1 and pulled the Bulldogs even at 3-3. Then Wyoming's Silviya Zhelyazkova edged Anne Susdorf 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) on Court 6. Susdorf had two match points serving at 6-5 in the third set.   
   San Jose State squandered a 3-1 lead. In the deciding match, Sharon Coone topped Abbie Pahz 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6.
   Big Sky Conference Championships in Gold River -- The top-seeded Sacramento State women trounced fourth-seeded Northern Arizona 4-0 to reach the final at the Gold River Racquet Club in the Sacramento region.
   The Hornets (17-10), seeking their 14th consecutive Big Sky tournament title, will face No. 2 Idaho today at 2 p.m. Admission is free. The Vandals outclassed No. 3 Montana 4-1.
