Stanford men upset UCLA; Altamirano stays unbeaten

Paul Goldstein
The Stanford men are rebounding under new coach Paul Goldstein.
The 36th-ranked Cardinal surprised No. 15 UCLA 4-3 on Friday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. It was Stanford's first win over the Bruins in eight tries and extended the Cardinal's winning streak to eight matches.
Nolan Paige gave Stanford (14-4, 5-0 Pacific-12 Conference) an insurmountable 4-2 lead with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Joseph Di Giulio on Court 5.
Stanford faces an even bigger challenge today against No. 5 USC, which has won five of the last six NCAA titles. The Cardinal will try to end its nine-match losing streak to the Trojans beginning at 2 p.m. at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford has won 17 NCAA men's team titles, second to USC's 21, but none since 2000. The Cardinal has lost in the first round of the NCAA Championships in the past two years.
Altamirano remains unbeaten -- Freshman Collin Altamirano of Sacramento improved to 15-0 in singles, and No. 4 Virginia routed Georgia Tech 7-0 in Charlottesville, Va.
Altamirano, ranked 72nd, outlasted Carlos Benito 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 on Court 5 as the Cavaliers (17-3, 9-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) extended their win streak to eight matches.
Virginia has won 133 consecutive conference matches (regular season and tournaments), the longest streak in ACC history in any sport.
Altamirano won the USTA Boys 18 National Championships in 2013 and was the runner-up last year to Wimbledon junior champion Noah Rubin.
