Plane truth: Ex-Cal star racks up miles

John Paul Fruttero's prize money this year is unimpressive. His frequent flier miles are another matter.
In the past three weeks, the 31-year-old doubles specialist from San Jose has flown from Taiwan to Portugal to South Korea.
Seeded fourth in the $75,000 Busan (South Korea) Open, Fruttero and Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus held off Hyun-Woo Nam of South Korea and Bumpei Sato of Japan 6-4, 7-6 (1) Tuesday in the first round.
Even though Fruttero has earned only $12,289 this year, he is ranked a career-high No. 83 in doubles. The former Cal All-American and Raven Klaasen of South Africa won a Challenger title in Taiwan before losing in the first round of an ATP World Tour event in Portugal.
Klaasen and countryman Izak Van der Merwe, the top seeds in Busan, also reached the second round.
WTA in Madrid -- Raquel Kops-Jones, a former NCAA doubles champion from Cal, and Abigail Spears of San Diego lost to seventh-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova and Galina Voskoboeva, both of Kazakhstan, 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
Women's Challenger in Raleigh, N.C. -- Asia Muhammed of the Sacramento Capitals in World TeamTennis lost to Alexandra Mueller of Abington, Pa., 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the first round of the $25,000 Raleigh Women's Challenger.
Mueller and Muhammed, seeded first in doubles, are scheduled to play qualifiers Cecilia Costa Melgar of Chile and Nicole Martinez of Ecuador on Wednesday in the opening round.
