Stanford, Cal women reach NCAA last 16

   Fourth-seeded Stanford and ninth-seeded Cal breezed into the round of 16 in the NCAA Division I Women's Championships with 4-0 victories at home Saturday.
   The Cardinal (20-1) dominated Yale (4-0), and the Bears (19-6) crushed Pepperdine (16-9).
    Regional sites were used for the first two rounds. The remaining rounds will be played in Athens, Ga., from Thursday through May 22.
   On Thursday, Stanford will face 13th-seeded Northwestern (20-8), and Cal will meet unseeded Georgia Tech (15-11). The Wildcats advanced with a 4-2 victory over Notre Dame in Evanston, Ill., while the Yellow Jackets upset eighth-seeded Alabama 4-3 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
   It will be the second straight year Stanford and Northwestern have met in the NCAA round of 16. The Cardinal won 4-2 last year at Stanford.
   NCAA Men's Championships -- Eleventh-seeded Stanford and 14th-seeded Cal coasted into the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championships with 4-0 home wins.
   The Cardinal (18-8) overwhelmed Sacramento State (11-13), and the Bears demolished Texas-San Antonio (13-11).
   Stanford and Cal will play at home again today, with the Cardinal taking on Santa Clara at noon and Cal going against Texas Tech (16-8) at 1 p.m. The Broncos (22-5), making their first NCAA appearance, stunned Texas 4-1 at Stanford, and the Red Raiders (16-8) eliminated Cal Poly 4-1 in Berkeley.
   Women's Challenger in Raleigh, N.C. -- Top-seeded Alexandra Mueller of Abington, Pa., and Asia Muhammed of Henderson, Nev., reached the doubles final of the $25,000 Raleigh Women's Challenger on a walkover by unseeded Lauren Albanese of Coral Springs, Fla., and Anastasia Kharchenko of Ukraine.
   The reason for the default was not available.
   Muhammed, 21, will debut for the Sacramento Capitals of World TeamTennis in July. She and Mueller  face second-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski and Marie-Eve Pelletier, both of Canada, in today's final.
   Muhammed seeks her fifth doubles title on the ITF Women's Circuit.
